Chocura Lake Description

Near Tamworth, in Carroll county, New Hampshire. ACCESS: canoe/cartop at outlet (bridge), The Grove, South end of lake. Chocorua Lake is familiar to travelers on NH 16 who approach the White Mountains from the south. The view of craggy Mount Chocorua from the lake is one of the most famous in all of New England. Despite the presence of NH 16 on the east and several well-concealed cottages on its western shore, Chocorua Lake manages to have a wild feel.
Chocurua Lake, a pleasant spot for a morning or afternoon paddle, located at the base of Mt. Chocorua, one of New England's most famous and frequently photographed mountains, is a prime spot for fishing from mid-April to early-June. The 222-acre lake remains off-limits to motors, so you will only have to contend with road noise from Route 16, which runs along the eastern side of the lake. The lake can be extremely rough during northwest gales which blow off MT. Chocurua. Keep an eye out for clouds forming at the mountains peak, a sign of high winds to come. There is good brook trout fishing at the inlet and outlet of the lake. No outboard motors are allowed. Chocorua Lake also offers some good Smallmouth Bass fishing along it's sandy shorelines. Rainbow Trout fishing is good in May and June when insect hatches occur. Boats may be launched at the lower end of the lake where a bridge crosses the narrow neck of water. Average ice-out date is late April. The lake consists of inlets, outlets, ledges and shoreline brush.
